DC Jazz Online has announced the winners in its first annual recording competition. Winner of the first place award was the selection "Nat's Groove" written by Todd Butler and performed by the Baltimore-based Todd Butler Group.

Eldersburg resident Todd Butler, who has been playing the trumpet since he was a teenager and whose popular jazz quintet has drawn critical acclaim in the region, has written "Mojo," which will premiere on Sept. 29 at Loyola University Maryland performed by the Baltimore Jazz Alliance.

For one who is reasonably new on the scene, 30 year old trumpeter/ educator Todd Butler has made a lot of inroads in 10 short years. Butler has used his talent, time and learning to develop some great "chops" and a good realistic attitude, a major survival technique.
